eScholarship Publishing Initiatives
The traditional model of scholarly communication has become expensive, restrictive, and increasingly limited in its ability to make information accessible. To address these concerns, the eScholarship program was launched by the University of California in 2000. The program is housed at the California Digital Library and run by the Office of Scholarly Communication.
The eScholarship program facilitates innovation and supports experimentation in the production and dissemination of scholarship. Through the use of innovative technology, the program is working to improve all aspects of scholarly communication, including its creation, peer review, management, dissemination, and preservation.
In partnership with librarians, scholars, publishers, information technologists, and professionals in other memory organizations, the eScholarship program has developed the following collections and services:
- eScholarship Editions: Provides access to a growing collection of digital texts and electronic editions of academic monographs, including more than 1,400 UC Press titles. Nearly 500 of the electronic books are available for free to the public.
- eScholarship Repository: This free, open-access repository infrastructure supports the full range of scholarly output, from pre-publication materials to journals and peer-reviewed series, by offering UC departments direct control of publishing.
